Something happened to you that shouldn’t have. Maybe it was a childhood you didn’t choose. A parent who couldn’t show up. A betrayal you didn’tsee coming. An accident, a diagnosis, a loss you’re still carrying around in your chest years later. You didn’t do anything to deserve it. That part is true, and I’m not going to soften it.
For about ten years, I had a sentence I said to myself. Sometimes out loud, mostly not. This wasn’t my fault. And it was true. Every single time I said it, it was completely true. That’s what made it so hard to see what it was doing to me.
Because here’s what I’ve watched happen to so many people, myself included. We hold onto it wasn’t my fault so tightly that we never get to the next part. And the next part is where everything changes. It wasn’t your fault. It is your responsibility. Not because that’s fair. Because it’s the only thing that gives you any power.
When we don’t take responsibility for what comes next, life starts happening to us. The hard marriage is happening to us. The exhaustion is happening to us. The anxiety, the symptoms, the same fight with the same person for the tenth time. The job we hate. The body that won’t cooperate. All of it lands on us like weather. Something we endure. Something we have no say in.
And I want to be careful here, because this can sound like blame and it isn’t. You’re not doing it wrong. This is the most natural response in the world to being hurt by something you didn’t cause. But it’s a terrible place to live, because it leaves you waiting. Waiting for someone to apologize. Waiting for your circumstances to change. Waiting for the person who hurt you to finally understand what they did. Waiting for the thing that broke you to somehow, on its own, fix itself. I waited a long time for that. Nobody came.
Here’s what I eventually had to face. Every year I spent waiting for someone else to make it right was another year the thing that happened to me kept happening. Not because they were still doing it, but because I was still living inside it. The event was over. The story kept running. And the story is the part that shapes your life. Who you trust. What you expect. Whether you brace before you walk into a room. How you talk to yourself at two in the morning. Whether you believe good things are for other people. That’s the part still being written, and you’re the only one holding the pen.
The day it changed for me was the day I stopped asking why did this happen to me and started asking what am I going to do about it. That felt heavy at first. Honestly, it felt unfair. I remember being angry that it was on me to clean up something I didn’t make a mess of. But underneath the weight was something I hadn’t felt in years. Choice. Because if my life is just happening to me, there’s nothing to do. I’m a passenger. But if I’m the one responding to it, then every response is a decision, and decisions can change. That’s the whole thing. That’s the entire difference between a life that feels like it’s being done to you and a life you’re actually living.
None of this means pretending it didn’t happen. It doesn’t mean forgiving anyone before you’re ready, or letting anybody off the hook, or telling yourself it was secretly a gift. It doesn’t mean doing it alone, either. Some things need a therapist. Some things need a really long conversation with someone who loves you. Some things take years. It just means the story stops being about what they did and starts being about what you do.
So that’s the sentence. This wasn’t my fault. Ten years of being right about something that wasn’t helping me. It was never a lie. It just wasn’t the end of the thought, and I’d been stopping there.
You’ve probably been carrying this for a long time. Longer than most people around you realize. And I know some part of you is tired of hearing that you have to be the one to do the work. You already did the hardest part, which was surviving it. But I promise you this: the moment it becomes yours to do is the moment it becomes possible.
You are not what happened to you. You’re what you do next.
