Why Chronic Pain is One of the Most Misunderstood Health Issues — And Why Surgery Won’t Solve It

Chronic pain is one of the most misunderstood health issues in the world today. It affects millions of people, yet so many still don’t understand what’s actually going on in the body. This lack of understanding leads people to pursue unnecessary surgeries, injections, and a wide range of procedures that, in the end, don’t resolve the root cause of the pain.

In fact, what’s even more troubling is that many of these treatments not only fail but can also make the problem worse. It’s frustrating — for the person in pain, and for the family and friends who see them go through endless cycles of procedures, hoping for relief that never comes.

So, let’s set the record straight: Most pain that lasts longer than three months is neuroplastic, meaning it’s not caused by tissue damage or injury — it’s in the brain and nervous system. What does this mean? Simply put, the solution to chronic pain is not physical. It’s in how your brain and nervous system are responding to the stimuli. No amount of surgery, injections, or anti-inflammatory medications will actually fix the root cause of your pain.

Here’s why: When we experience trauma or emotional stress — especially early in life — the body learns to suppress or avoid feelings. Society plays a huge role in this: we’re often taught to be “tough” and not show vulnerability or emotion. This becomes ingrained, and over time, we push our emotions down to avoid dealing with them.

The problem is, what we don’t feel doesn’t just go away. It gets stored in the body. And that emotional repression triggers the nervous system, causing the fight-or-flight response to kick in. The brain interprets these unprocessed emotions as “dangerous,” and when that fight-or-flight response is constantly activated, it puts the body into a state of chronic stress. This is what’s called threat physiology.

When the body stays in threat mode for too long, it leads to chronic tension, hypersensitivity of the nerves, and heightened sensations that become overwhelming. This is where most chronic pain originates — from the nervous system being stuck in a state of danger.

And yes, your stress levels, the trauma you experienced as a kid, and even the way you speak to yourself — it all plays a massive role in how your nervous system reacts and contributes to your chronic joint pain.

Here’s where it gets tricky: Pain is real. Pain feels physical. And when you go to the doctor or specialist, you’ll often get diagnosed with bulging discs, torn tendons, arthritis, or some other tissue abnormality. The thing is, tissue damage is actually quite common — it’s a natural part of aging and wear and tear. In fact, most of us have some degree of tissue damage. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s causing your pain.

Here’s the truth: Pain is often not caused by the tissue itself but by how the nervous system is interpreting the signals. And there are thousands of studies that confirm this. Research consistently shows that most people who have bulging discs, torn rotator cuffs, or tendinitis often don’t experience pain at all. In fact, more people with these tissue abnormalities don’t experience pain than those who do. It’s the state of the nervous system that makes the difference.

This is where the cutting-edge work of brain science and pain researchers has revealed the truth: chronic pain is not about the tissue damage itself — it’s about how your nervous system processes that damage. So, when you focus on fixing the physical “damage” through surgery or injections, you’re missing the real issue. The more you chase after fixing the physical symptom, the more the nervous system perceives that there’s danger — and the cycle continues. In fact, often the pain just moves to another area of the body because that’s how the nervous system works. It’s trying to protect you, but in doing so, it creates more pain in different places.

So, what’s the solution? The answer is simple, yet powerful: heal the nervous system. Until you address the root cause — which is the dysregulated nervous system — the pain will persist. The body can’t fully heal when it’s stuck in survival mode.

I know this because I’ve been there.

I spent years dealing with excruciating chronic pain. I was diagnosed with bulging discs, pinched nerves, muscle imbalances, torn tendons, arthritis, and joint abnormalities — but none of these were the true causes of my pain. I saw countless specialists, tried every therapy imaginable, and nothing helped.

What I learned is that chronic pain isn’t just about what’s happening in the body; it’s about what’s happening in the brain and nervous system. Once I understood that, and focused on healing the nervous system instead of just addressing physical symptoms, I started to experience real relief.

The good news is that once you start working with your nervous system — rather than just your body — healing becomes possible. It doesn’t happen overnight, but with the right tools and practices, the pain can shift and even disappear.

It’s time to stop chasing temporary fixes and start working on the nervous system. That’s where true healing begins. Remember, the solution is not in a pill, surgery, or injection — it’s in regulating your nervous system, processing repressed emotions, and learning to be present in your body.

What to do next? If you or someone you know is stuck in the cycle of chronic pain, it’s time to shift your focus. Start healing the nervous system. Stop the endless search for the next quick fix, and start working with your body in a way that brings real healing.

Healing is possible. But it begins with understanding THE REAL CAUSE OF CHRONIC PAIN and addressing the root cause. And once you do that, your body will have everything it needs to finally let go of the pain.
