Lyme. Mold. Mast Cell. Fibro. IBS. Chronic Pain. Same Root Cause.

Lyme. Mold. Mast Cell. Fibro. IBS. Chronic Pain. Same Root Cause.

Lyme. Mold. Mast Cell. Fibro. IBS. Chronic Pain. Same Root Cause.

You’ve been told — or you believe — you have seventeen different problems. I believe you have one.

Have you been told it was Lyme? Mold? Parasites? Epstein-Barr? Mast cell activation? SIBO? Histamine intolerance? Hormonal imbalances? Food sensitivities? Fibromyalgia? Chronic fatigue? POTS? Your bulging disc? Narrowing of the spinal canal? Your torn rotator cuff? Your migraines? Your anxiety? Your insomnia?

Maybe you’ve collected three of those diagnoses. Maybe seven. Maybe you’ve lost count. And for every single one, someone handed you a protocol. A supplement. A specialist. A new test or suggested surgery. And maybe some of it helped — for a while. Until it didn’t. Until the next symptom showed up wearing a different name. Until you started wondering why you keep getting new diagnoses but never actually getting better.

Here’s what the research has been telling us for decades — and what most of your doctors have never been taught: underneath every single one of those conditions is a nervous system that has reached capacity.

Not a broken body. Not a mysterious infection. Not a genetic defect. Not a joint abnormality. A nervous system stuck in a state of threat — producing real, measurable, physical symptoms as a response to danger it perceives but that isn’t there.

And we don’t have to guess about this, nor is this a theory. The science is overwhelming.

The Findings Were Never the Cause

In 2023, Dr. Howard Schubiner and his colleagues assessed 222 chronic back and neck pain patients. Ninety-seven point seven percent had at least one spinal abnormality on imaging. But when they evaluated what was actually causing the pain, only 5% — fewer than one in twenty — had pain driven by those structural findings. The nervous system was the driver in roughly 90% of cases.

A landmark study in the New England Journal of Medicine scanned people with zero back pain — not a twinge — and found that 52% had disc bulges, 27% had disc protrusions, and not a single one had symptoms. A 2015 systematic review confirmed it on a massive scale: disc degeneration was present in 37% of pain-free 20-year-olds and 96% of pain-free 80-year-olds. These findings increase with age, just like gray hair and wrinkles. They are not evidence of disease.

It’s not just spines. Twenty-three percent of people with zero shoulder pain have full-thickness rotator cuff tears — over age 80, that number climbs to 51%. Up to 72% of pain-free people aged 45–60 have labral tears. Meniscal tears are present in 19–56% of adults who feel nothing.

The findings your doctor pointed to on your scan — the ones that sent you into a spiral of fear, that led to the surgery consultation, that changed how you move and what you believe about your body — those same findings exist in millions of people who have no symptoms at all. If the findings were the cause, everyone who had them would be symptomatic. They’re not.

What No One Is Connecting for You

Your doctor told you you have stenosis and narrowing of the spinal canal and a bulging disc and inflamed joints and hidden viruses and bacterial overgrowth and candida and mineral imbalances and traces of Lyme and mold markers. Those findings may be real. But here’s what no one is telling you:

Stenosis. Narrowing. The nerve is “right there.” You’ve been told there’s nothing anyone can do — that this is mechanical, that it’s bone against nerve, that your only options are surgery or suffering. I’veheard this from thousands of people. And I’ve watched thousands of those same people heal their nervous systems and get out of pain — completely — without a single thing changing on their imaging. Myself and my colleagues have seen this over and over for decades. People with stenosis. People with bone-on-bone knees. People with joints they were told were destroyed. The narrowing is still there. The bone-on-bone is still there. The pain is gone. Because the pain was never coming from the finding. It was coming from a nervous system that was amplifying it.

It Goes Far Beyond Pain

A nervous system stuck in fight or flight suppresses digestion, weakens the gut barrier, dysregulates the immune system, and creates the exact conditions where bacterial overgrowth, candida, parasites, and inflammation flourish. The findings didn’t put your nervous system into threat. It was the other way around — a nervous system stuck in threat created the conditions where those findings appeared.

Think of it as a volume dial. Two people can have the exact same findings — the same bulging disc, the same stenosis, the same bacterial overgrowth, the same antibodies — but in one person the volume is turned all the way down and they feel nothing. In the other, it’s cranked to full and they’re in agony. The findings are the same. The volume is what’s different. And the volume dial is your nervous system.

When researchers stimulated the vagus nerve — without changing a single thing about diet, supplements, or gut bacteria — gut symptoms improved across seven separate studies. The nervous system healed the gut without touching the gut. But when researchers successfully eradicated SIBO with antibiotics — bacteria gone, breath tests normalized — 43.7% of patients had full recurrence within nine months. The gut was “fixed.” The nervous system rebuilt the problem. Because the nervous system was never addressed.

You don’t heal your gut and then calm your nervous system. You calm your nervous system and your gut begins to heal. You don’t wait until the mold is gone to start feeling safe. You start feeling safe, and your immune system stops overreacting to everything in your environment.

The Search Itself Is Making You Worse

The very act of chasing all of those diagnoses and trying to fix them — the researching, the testing, the doctor-hopping, doing physical therapy, getting massages, trying a new diet, the supplement-stacking, the 2 a.m. Google spirals — is not just failing to fix the problem. It is actively making it worse.

Each new test reinforces the idea that something is wrong with you. Each new protocol confirms the belief that your body is unsafe. Every failed treatment strengthens the story that you’re not fixable. And all of it — the fear, the hypervigilance, the sense of brokenness — keeps your nervous system locked in the state of threat that’s generating the symptoms in the first place.

But Can This Actually Be Undone?

A randomized controlled trial published in JAMA Psychiatry took 151 people with chronic back pain and gave one group just eight sessions of a brain-based therapy that teaches patients their pain is generated by the nervous system, not by tissue damage. No surgery. No medication. No physical intervention of any kind.

Roughly 70% percent became nearly or completely pain-free. Compared to 10% with usual care. And those results held at a five-year follow-up. No one touched their spines.

My own neck tells the same story. A decade ago, imaging showed multiple bulging discs, severe misalignment, and degeneration. Doctors were certain: this is causing your pain. Today, the imaging looks the same — some of it slightly worse, because that’s what time does to spines. I have been completely pain-free for years. Not managed pain. Zero pain. The findings didn’t change. My nervous system did.

So, What Does This Mean for You?

If your nervous system was regulated — if it was out of fight or flight, out of survival mode, out of the chronic threat state it’s been stuck in — your symptoms would lose their reason to exist. Not because you suppressed them or outsmarted them or found the right combination of supplements. Because the system that was generating them finally got the message that the war is over.

This is not theory. This is published, peer-reviewed neuroscience from the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Psychiatry, the American Journal of Neuroradiology, and the Journal of Pain. This is what the research has been showing for decades. And it applies to every condition on that list at the top of this post.

I’m launching something specifically designed for this: a Nervous System Capacity Building Series, starting at the end of September.

If anything in this post made your stomach drop, made something click, or made you think, Wait… that’s me, you’re going to want to be there.
